Celebrated in the month of June worldwide, Gay pride or LGBTIQ+ pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTIQ+) people.
And no one better embodies this than Selby “Selbyonce” Mkhize.
Selby’s humble beginnings enhanced his positive attitude and “gay” approach on life. He was proudly raised by a strong woman and family in Mawotana. As a child he has always embraced life and the world as a beautiful existence and journey in discovering where he truly fits in. This was not a difficult circumstance as his eagerness to learn, passion to succeed led him to where he is today. Today he is Ukhozi FM’s first openly gay deejay and the listeners love him.
Being gay, black and growing up in a township is never easy. Society can be very judgemental and cruel and that can deter a lot of people. But not Selby, he has risen above all and shone like a diamond he is through all the adversity. Now he is renowned radio personality, MC, awards host and actor and it’s all because of his tenacity and willpower.
Selby’s first role on TV was playing a role of a transgender in the popular primetime show Generations, playing a transgender. “Transgender” is an umbrella term that describes people whose gender identity or expression does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.
This topic is very close to Selby, when he played the transgender character he actually got to feel first-hand the challenges and dismissive behaviour towards transgenders.
What he hopes for during this pride, is that issues faced by the transgender community be highlighted more and have better educational platforms on how people we can learn to be more receptive and welcoming towards transgenders because even within the LGBTIQ+ community they face discrimination and it’s all because there is not enough education.
We are happily proud this month and flaunting our success, we want the world to know we are here and we are winning. Our Pride, Our Success.
